This 2005 album is one of many released in the UK in recent times showcasing the powerful prophetic worship ministry of Upton. 'Open Up The Earth' is a series of live recordings, and in this case they mean live - it was recorded straight into stereo and mastered with no additional mixing. There are three discs presented here - a DVD, a CD of some of these songs and a CD of spontaneous worship. Jason's distinctive, slightly rasping vocals and expressive piano playing dominate, sometimes with a wistful whistle for accompaniment giving a Celtic feel and at other times as part of a full tilt rock number. The songs cover a lot of ground but have a common theme of God breaking through and entering in to normal lives in a supernatural way. The spontaneous nature of these songs can lead to a repetitive feel which is accentuated by the lyrics using repetition to hammer home their point and the heart felt calling out to God. The camera work is standard two/three camera mix that makes sure the worshippers were not disturbed but does make for bland viewing. The CDs help the listener to get involved in a deeper way with no images to get in the way of the powerful lyrics and performance. Altogether a very powerful set of discs that will bring willing listeners into the presence of God but not necessarily a something to put on and relax to.
