This beautiful instrumental album is neither classical nor jazz by simple definition. Although it is released by a world music label, even roots and acoustic are insufficient descriptions for this exciting concoction of old and new. To call it MOR would be an insult even though Burt Bacharach is back in fashion. Small wonder then that self-taught flamenco guitarist Jason Carter should find the need to invent his own nomenclature -Contemporary Spanish Guitar - and use it as a subtitle on both his albums for ARK of which this is the second. Aside from a dazzling suite of jazz standards that includes "Summertime" and "Autumn Leaves", the remaining pieces are Jason's original compositions. The beauty of this musical genre is its unpredictability. One minute we are lulled by rippling strings until suddenly the guitar is slapped and strings are pulled as the mood takes a new turn. Then just as abruptly, there is a period of silence before a new finger stretching run takes us off in yet another direction. Not the stuff for easy listening, this vibrant collection has infinitely more in common with a spaghetti western than supermarket muzak. It's bound to refresh any jaded palate.
