With 50 tracks on two CDs (time two hours 18 minutes) this collection covers just about every aspect of Ishmael's (Ian Smale) musical ministry. There are some intriguing tracks including Ishmael & Andy collector items and Ishmael United's stab at gospel punk. But of course it is the children's music which dominates this collection. Many of the recordings have been produced on a miniscule budget. Happily the rough edge to the sound on many of the recordings actually adds character to the music which could have been lost with an expensive production. But musical quality apart, this album is great fun and in some places, plain out right silly. Ishmael is a talented songwriter with a wonderful imagination. As well as being fun the songs put across a deep gospel message. Though generally considered as children's music, Ishmael aims his music at the whole family not just the children. The last line from his song "Nicodemus" sums up the ministry of Ishmael's music to me: "There's but one way to get to God, and that's the child-like way". Ishmael is already planning a similar release in 25 years' time provisionally called 'Life Begins at 70'.
