Considering their huge popularity in church circles, the youth culture band of the Hillsong mega church have picked up their share of critics. The main criticisms have been that a) too many of their songs rely on stereotypical stadium rock arrangements and b) too many of their lyrics are both shallow and me-centred. On this, their second studio set, both criticisms have been addressed. No one could call the arrangements here stereotyped and with more synth work and less layered guitar work while some of the percussion, particularly on "Nova", is outstanding. Standouts are "Go", the most upbeat track on 'Aftermath', "Like An Avalanche", one of the two tracks led by Jill McCloghry, and "Rhythms Of Grace", a beautiful song with effecting piano work on the bridge. Another bonus is to note the return of Marty Sampson, who hasn't appeared on any Hillsong project for a few years, and it's his voice which sings out one of the most effective lyrics on the title track ("In a moment of glorious surrender/You were broken for all the world to see/Lifted out of the ashes/I am found in the aftermath"). A gem of a song and overall, the best Hillsong United album I've heard so it's a shame they gave some trendy designer cart blanche to put together a preposterous booklet design full of upside down passages.
