Her debut 'Highly Recommended' 'crossed over1 into America's predominantly white Christian radio stations (though I always thought the title track sounded rather disconcertingly like a Degarmo And Key performance) while this lady's second album is doing likewise, as well as exacting all sorts of praise from punters who read Blues And Soul (ie, unsaved soul buffs). Helen's voice is a marvel, a rich, earthy contralto with all the texture and tone of the long and proud tradition of great gospel singers. But there's nothing store front church about her arrangements. Ranging from pop-rock funkers where rock guitars and synth-delivered hooks do battle with funky rhythm tracks; and lush soul ballads which for some tastes veer perilously close to the middle of the road, this is, of its kind, a fine soul-gospel album. The inspirational ballad title track is a standout.
