Stacy "Coffee" Jones and Teron "Bonafide" Carter - aka Grits - have been making hip-hop since 1995, in that time releasing nine albums and featuring on film and TV soundtracks including MTV's Pimp My Ride. 'The Greatest Hits' is, predictably, a collection of the highlights of their career. But, I hear you ask, didn't they already release a 'best of' album? Well, sort of. The anthology '7', released in 2006, strangely ignored their pre-'Art Of Translation' material, a whole six years' worth of songs. This double album is more comprehensive: Disc one contains 15 tracks representing every release so far, but it is disc two that will be the real incentive for most Grits fans to buy this: Another 15 cuts, 12 previously unreleased. For new fans Grits' accessible Southern rap style is best showcased on disc one, with their more well known songs such as "Ooh Ahh" and "Tennessee Bwoys" featured. The unreleased tracks are mostly demos and so aren't as polished as the rest - they certainly aren't bad, but new listeners will not be as interested as the wizened fans. While 'best of' albums are never particularly exciting additions to a group's discography, this one does a great job of showcasing Grits' talents while the bonus material makes it a good buy for die-hard fans as well.
