Reviewed by Trevor Kirk In the field of Southern gospel music, some names stand out, some for the right reasons, some otherwise. I daren’t begin to list the average, bad and downright awful purveyors of clichéd cornball cheesiness that it’s been my misfortune to have to audition for UCB; on the other hand, there’s Greater Vision, one of the best of the best, the real crème de la crème. But hang on a minute, I hear you cry, I read your recent review of the ‘Live In First Atlanta’ thing (CR68), and Greater Vision are a trio, and so why is this album called ‘Quartets’? Elementary, my dear reader – they’ve borrowed some bass singers to make up the numbers, including Glenn Dustin of Legacy Five, George Younce of the Cathedrals, Tim Duncan of Signature Sound, Gene McDonald of The Florida Boys and Christian Davis of The Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet, and take it from me, those guys are some of the best bass singers in the business. The result is some cracking harmony music with the cringe-ometer rarely budging from absolute zero. “Just Ask” with Tim Duncan is one of the hot songs on the UCB Inspirational playlist at present, but there’s plenty of other good stuff here, and playing time at 50 minutes-plus is generous. Southern gospel fans can buy with confidence.
