Greater Vision are a trio of talented gospel singers, Messrs Gerald Wolfe, Rodney Griffin and Jason Waldroup, and this album, recorded in the First Baptist Church, Atlanta, and introduced by its pastor, Dr Charles Stanley, is for me a welcome antidote to the burgeoning inspirational overkill of the Gaithers. Greater Vision as a group came into existence in 1990, and since their foundation have garnered a hatful of Dove and Southern Gospel Music Association awards and nominations (they were the only Southern gospel group invited to perform at the 2000 Dove Awards bash, which, bearing in mind the plethora of purveyors of the genre, must say something) and a reputation for hard work, something like 190 concerts a year, plus TV and personal appearances, outreach meetings and what not. All this effort and experience shows in the relaxed, natural, and confident way they come across; no cornball cheesiness, instead, plenty of good gags and stories, always told against themselves, and whilst the material is the usual sort of fare, it's mostly self-penned, and very well sung. If you'd like to investigate Southern gospel but you don't want to tackle all those Homecoming Friends albums, you might like to look this one out.
