In the past, of course, Gary has received numerous accolades and awards for his songwriting ability having written hits for his ex-wife Amy Grant as well as penning songs for country stars Kenny Rogers, Wynonna and Alabama. But as a singer Gary's releases have been less frequent and this is his first studio album since 2002. As it turns out it could well be his best. His voice is rich and vibrant and far more convincing than when he was a purveyor of pop rock CCM while his choice of guests here - Alison Krauss, John Rich, Rebecca Lynn Howard and Tanya Tucker (now a born again Christian) - are well chosen. One song Gary didn't write is the hugely catchy "If God Had A Front Porch" on which Alison Krauss joins him on the chorus. A surprise guest is daughter Sarah, who joins her dad on "Put It In His Hands" while Gary's wife Cassie is heard on the Christmas-themed ballad "All About A Baby". But the classic on this set is the autobiographical "Everything I Know" which to me is Gary's best since his gem "Sweet Jesus" from 1994's 'The Light Inside' album. Having overcome his personal demons and found happiness with wife and family, Gary has returned to his role of singer/songwriter with a maturity and creative edge only hinted at previously.
