Divorced from Amy Grant and with his successful TV show cancelled it wasn't long ago that Chapman's world fell apart. His last album for Reunion Records sank without trace and so Chapman, now married to an animal trainer and rebuilding his life, found that the easiest way to move forwards was to help start his own record label! The first release is this one where Gary wrote all the material and played all the instruments. A close listen reveals that the lower budget does show through sometimes and although Gary has one of the great voices in Christian music, there isn't that much here to stretch it, which is a shame. A more adult easy feel, he barely raises a sweat in the rock'n'roll department. Lyrically he is in a place of personal restoration, aware of the grace of God and this theme is explored on "Nothing To Hide" where Gary recognises that life has different seasons and he has learnt the freedom of letting down the barriers. "He Thinks I Hung The Moon" is a gorgeous little song for his son and "Like I Love You Now" is a marriage song befitting someone who is a newly wed. For me the song that stands out is "I Need Jesus" with its prayer-like acknowledgement of his Saviour. A bit too sugary in places, I long for more grit but maybe that's still to come.
