Cross Rhythms editor Tony Cummings recently raved about the 2010 'Breakthrough' album from Texan rapper Kim Ruiz (stage name G.L.O which stands for God's Love Only) and her latest release - a six track EP - further cements her standing as one of Christendom's premier hip-hop talents. Hip-hop as a whole is famous for being forthright and combative and Ruiz's skill lies in maintaining this approach whilst communicating the love and values of God. All vocal duties are performed by Ruiz herself from the sung harmonies to her trademark rapping - often directly using Scripture to great effect - and her obvious talents are backed up and enhanced by some expert production from Alex Espinoza who takes the listener on a journey through various hip-hop landscapes from dub step worship in "I Will Bless The Lord" to the more traditional gangsta sound of "God Ain't Done Yet" - the latter replacing the violence and pride of the style with lyrics about persevering with God's help without losing any of the genre's urgency. Elsewhere, Ruiz further bucks the trend in the self-explanatory "Humble" whilst the funky and completely danceable title track is the icing on the cake of this exemplary release.
