It must be nigh on impossible for any band emanating from West Sussex to avoid the inevitable comparisons with Delirious?, and indeed, in a brief phone conversation with lead singer Aaron Frith, he freely admitted to being under the influence not only of Martin Smith and co (who isn't?) but also U2. This latter comparison didn't jump out at me on listening to 'Sense Of Adventure' though, and I must say that Fruit have done a pretty good job at establishing their own sound and style on this debut five-track CD. I always feel that any effort to produce a private CD is meritorious in itself, but given the fact that the average age of the band is 18, it's an especially worthy achievement, and it's equally worthwhile a good many of you sending off your seven quid - I would say a must if you live in or near Chichester itself. To get back to the Delirious? bit, the most obvious bit is Aaron Frith's voice, but mark you, he can sing in his own right and the quality of his voice gives the music something to hang on to, the lyrics being as clear as the message. Fruit have worked hard to get this musically as tight as they can, and sensibly they've left this at five songs rather than trying to fill out a whole album. Musical quality is really very good and I'm sure a more 'filled out' sound will develop as they explore further into the wonderful world of recording. Buy and enjoy.
