As JesusFreakHideout recently pointed out, Family Force 5 have been "maligned by the Christian industry for not being Christian enough" and "rejected by the mainstream public for having too much faith." But the Olds brothers keep touring, recording and turning out effervescent dance-friendly rock/pop hybrids. Big surprise here is the inclusion of "Walk On Water" with guest vocalist Melodie Wagner of Hillsong Young & Free. It's melodically strong and with a spiritually uplifting lyric. But just in case some fans might be thinking FF5 have dropped their zany party music personas, there's also the manic "BZRK" with a propulsive bassline and "Jet Pack Kicks" which one reviewer described as "so-nonsensical-it's-awesome." Lyrically FF5 continue to be something of a paradox, one moment conveying the persona of dumb party animals, the next passionate lovers of Christ but their musical invention and use of studio trickery remains unparalleled and even with the departure of Solomon 'Soul Glow Activatur' Olds and drummer/singer Jacob 'Crouton' Olds now handling the leads, there's no noticeable drop in standards. To finish with a quote from another recent review, "Family Force 5 have always danced to their own God-inspired tune and 'Time Stands Still' is not a departure from that fact." Long may that continue.
