The Sarf London girls have been the subject of many a Christian's "are they or aren't they?" argument ever since word got out that two of them were preachers' kids and that BeBe Winans had produced a track on their now double platinum debut album. I'll concentrate on their music for this review, which is hot. Forget all your prejudices about their teenybop fan following, Eternal make great music. Dedicated gospel fans may remember the title track, which was featured on Margaret Bell's criminally underrated debut album from a couple of years ago. Written and produced here by BeBe, it displays all his characteristic slickness. The pace slows down somewhat for the rest of the EP, with their version of Labi Siffre's "(Something Inside) So Strong" (which, coincidentally, was once covered by Margaret Bells' sister Vanessa). The best is saved for last with a heart-warming medley of both versions of "Amazing Grace" (both the popular one and the one with the same tune as "Danny Boy") and the closing track, another old favourite, "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". Truly lovely, these ladies sure can sing. At the time of writing, I was told that Eternal had surpassed Bananarama to become Britain's most successful all-girl group. That greatly restored my faith in British record buyers' tastes - until I heard the Power Rangers record, that is.
