Emery have been a band much hyped Stateside and have been involved in the highly successful Tooth & Nail tour that kicked off 2004. This six-piece (of which two interchange the main vocals with another on backing) are of course Tooth & Nail’s latest addition to their impressive roster and so then the levels of hype start to make more sense! Upon first listen they seem to me more suited to the hardcore genre but you start to realise that they fit into a brand of emo incorporating melodic hardcore elements rather than the reverse. Therefore they are a band that is likely to appeal to fans of bands such as Mewithoutyou. However to the more mainstream pallet they may be a little harder to swallow. Fans of metal, punk or indie for instance would all get something from this album but it would take a few plays before they started to tell one track from another, as it did for me, but will soon appreciate each tracks’ individual part to the jigsaw that makes ‘Weak’s End’. Whilst to the conventional ear “Walls” or “Fractions” may seem the best track, the six-minute final track “The Secret” is well worth a listen. The band show great vocal and lyrical talent and buckets of potential but musically fail to strike a chord with me. I will look forward greatly to their future material but Emery will need to find another gear to go up to make it beyond the realms of “average Tooth & Nail band”.
