For the unfamiliar, ETW hit hard at social issues and the problems of a violent culture. An uncompromising message soaked in the realities of the street, this compilation pulls together 16 songs from their four albums. The often disturbing subjects matter gives the compilation a focus in that is subtitled 'An Anthology Against Violence' and part of the proceeds will go to Mothers Against Violence. ETW are clearly serious about making a difference. The songs cover a range of topics but there's a sensitive side both in some of the laid back grooves and the emotional heart of some of the lyrics. Showing a different side of the violence, the standouts for me are the title tune which gives a broader perspective to the senseless killings of young black by young black. "Momma's Prayers" like so many of the songs here highlights both the social consequences of delinquent action while at the same time identifying how spiritual action can make a change. There are some remixes of some of their older stuff including a rework of "Stay Together" which examines the pressure of keeping marriages together in the midst of social problems. There's on newie, "Forgive And Forget" which has an airy acoustic feel and brings this compilation to an optimistic close.
