In my chronicling of Dub War's releases I very nearly missed the 'Soundclash EP', a limited edition EP featuring jungle and dub mixes of tracks from the two Earache albums from the likes of DJ Rap, Aphrodite and Roolsman. Throughout the band's history mixes like these have always popped up as B sides and bonus tracks but with this new collection they have become the focus of attention, revealing the alternative side of their nature. No thrash guitars and pounding drums here. Instead, drum loops and vocal samples, a dance sound leaning in the direction of ambient. Included are mixes of "One Chill", "Million Dollar Love", "Armchair Thriller" and one of my old favourites, "Nar Say A Ting" given a nice laid back reggae feel by Rootsman. A refreshing change and a great taster for the new freebie dub mix EP to be given with the relaunched second album in the summer.
