There seems to be this inverted snobbery amongst some sectors of the British gospel media that says that home grown gospel is never as good as that imported from America. Sad really when there is a lot of talent here and the scene has never been stronger. The truth is that UK gospel and R&B does sound different to the American stuff because our musical culture and heritage is different. So you get a uniquely British artist like London-based Donna Gardier, who is blessed with a strong versatile voice and the musical vision to create something that is message-driven but not packed with cliches. In the early '90s she recorded a solo album for Virgin and having become a Christian, more recently she's been singing with Clive Brown and the Shekinah Singers. 'Home' is definitely on the mellower side but with tight production, some excellent grooves and Donna's brilliant vocals, it really is a gem! Standouts include the understated groove of the opening cut "Decisions" and the half spoken half sung inspiration of the funky "I Am". I also like the sweet soul closing vibe of her cover of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)". Sounding fresh and classy, Donna Gardier is the business!
