Apparently this is Dolly's final attempt to regain premier country status before departing for pastures almost new. Certainly she has fired several warning shots here. "Something's Burning" is aggressive rock and "Walking On Sunshine" has a pop sound. Both are very poor songs and the question arises of why a singer of this ability and prestige is not choosier about material. "For The Good Times" has its ache and pathos washed out by a totally inappropriate late night, smoochy jazz backing. Some dodgy stuff going on here. The country songs are more convincing, good interpretations of evergreens "Today I Started Loving You Again", "Before The Next Teardrop Falls" and "Satin Sheets". Always was irritated by "Behind Closed Doors" though. Passable versions of the folksy "Just When I Needed You Most" and "After The Goldrush". "Don't Let Me Cross Over" sounds significant with the crossroads nature of this patchy album. Marginal Christian music interest save for Lady smith Black Mambazo's vocals on Cat Steven's "Peace Train".
