Although this isn't quite the R&B-orientated project the pre-publicity for 'Sensation' led me to expect, this is still a long, long way from the indie metal and emo once toted by Devin's old band Emery. The best category in which to place this album is pop and though that might not please the hipster following who support Bad Christian Records, it's the best I can do and seems to fit better than the "R&B indie rock" suggested by another reviewer. What we can all agree on is that Devin has a warm, smooth voice and his clean production is crisp and functional. Lyrically 'Sensation' deals with losing in love - "Just Another Song" tells us it's "about the girl that got away"; falling in love - "Dance With Me", let down by some banal lyrics; and longing for a fresh start - "Tide" which does contain some memorable lines ("I will separate myself from everything that I've become/All I want is to begin again"). For me the best songs and arrangements are "Buried Alive" and "Howl At The Moon" which have a darker alternative vibe and feel closer to Devin's previous solo project 'Life & Death'. Clearly Mr Shelton is endeavouring to find the best stylistic niche for his undoubted talents. I got a feeling the search will continue awhile.
