In 2003 Dr Pearson, a bass playing musician and songwriter who had tasted the big-time on Washington's R&B scene, was told by God to start his own independent music label and the IAmMusic company commenced. Considering that Pearson plucked many of the singers featured on his compositions/productions from his own local church and there are no big-name vocalists on this set save for the late, one time R&B star Al Johnson, this 19 song compilation ( with a bonus DVD featuring eight videos) is crammed with good things. Whether it is soulful, slow gospel burners like "No Greater Love" featuring singer Tony Peacock, the Al Johnson led, reggae-tinged "I Am What I Am", the searing treatment of Revelation 11 and 12 featuring Johnson with Minister John Butler and the thought-provoking "If This Were Really Love" with vocals by Tahesha Jones, the effect is consistent. Pearson specialises in modern gospel with a strong retro-soul feel and although personally I would have preferred less slow and midtempo songs and more of the go-go funk which was once part of the good doctor's musical armoury, there is no disputing that that these are skilfully written and classily produced songs of biblical faith and encouragement. The videos too are a nice bonus. If you have yet to catch up with the ministry of IAmMusic, and your tastes veer towards the classic soul of yesteryear, this compilation is for you.
