Phelps became known as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, where he captivated audiences with his high lyric tenor voice, effortlessly holding the thrilling high notes. This new release is a showcase for his phenomenal talent, which reflects his classical vocal training but also allows for a modern pop style. Classics like "Panis Angelicus" (Franck) and "O Mio Babbino Caro" (Puccini) captivate us from the very first entry of his liquid tones. The Nashville Recording Orchestra is sensational, accompanying with such sensitivity. I just loved Phelps' own arrangement of Beethoven's "Joyful, Joyful". Often this is performed at a rather stately pace, but this version simply crackles with excitement and joy. His arrangement of 'The Lord's Prayer' contains a stunning build up at the end: a real audience pleaser. Phelps is a songwriter too, and his "The Dream" is an epic ballad that is a real window on heavenly worship. He is joined by the Gaither Vocal Band here. He has also written his own setting of "Agnus Dei": a tender song featuring a duet with his daughter. If all this wasn't enough, there are also very successful forays into hits from musicals.
