David Glenn is an independent artist from Atlanta who is apparently building up a good local following; if this CD is anything to go by he should soon be receiving national and international acclaim. Produced by former Newsong member Scotty Wilbanks, this has a fresh and unique sound that instantly compels you to listen on. Musicians from According To John and Newsong are recruited to make up the impressive backing band, while the Passion Band's Candi Pearson and Heather Mitchell deliver some superb backing vocals throughout to perfectly compliment the distinctive vocal talents of David Glenn. But crucially it is features such as these that David would not want the listener to dwell on too much. While some of the musicianship on this CD does deserve recognition, it merely serves as a fine platform from which David can put across the main theme of the album: the purpose of life being to impact the Kingdom of God while abandoning selfish ambition. Title track "Not About Me" highlights this challenge, with the emphasis being placed firmly on the glory of God while touching on notions of faith, hope and love ("Are you ready to answer his call?/He'll give you everything you need/He's not gonna let you fall/He'll prepare you to do His will/He's given you a purpose in your life to fulfil"). Other highlights include the delightfully catchy "Forgiven", two versions of the beautiful "Bread Of Life", and my personal favourite "Stand Up". This is one of the standout songs musically, both lively and funky with hints of pop, country and blues. As a whole there are similarities in places with Chris Tomlin, but to reduce this album to just a number of highlights and comparisons would be unfair, because David Glenn has produced here an original and outstanding piece of work.
