Seasoned Wisconsin-based CCM singer/songwriter Danny Gokey's first album for Sparrow Records tackles the subject of believing in God's promises despite a perceived lack of evidence of them ever coming to fulfilment. Hitting the ground running with this theme in mind, proceedings get off to an optimistic start with the upbeat "New Day" which sets the scene for an album of radio friendly pop that hardly puts a foot wrong. Gokey explores various aspects of his chosen topic with the likes of "Better Because Of It" touching upon how God uses unexplainable pain in our lives whilst the stunning "Undertow" and equally impressive title track press home the point that God's love is unfailing whether we feel it or not. As well as a superbly executed and highly polished musical backdrop, Gokey's powerful vocals - full of sincerity and grit - are what makes this collection of inspirational tunes work with defiant numbers like "No Pressure" and "Fighter" sounding all the more convincing on account of the former American Idol finalist's performance. CCM legend Michael W Smith pops up on piano on "Love God Love People" whilst singer Mandisa duets with Gokey on the conscience-pricking "Tell Somebody" to add further weight to an already sturdy piece of work. Only the lightweight fluff of "Craziest Thing" doesn't quite hit the mark but only in the context of the quality found elsewhere on arguably Gokey's best release to date.
