In the early '80s somewhere on the New York streets and in the newest happening clubs, someone started messing with the discs as they span around the decks and scratching was invented. Slowly new style DJing crossed into popular culture with the likes of Grandmaster Flash and a whole new genre of music was invented by the DJs. They were only supposed to be spinning other people's records. We're used to rap and hip hop artists doing their thing but somehow the role of the DJ has largely diminished in comparison. Time to re-introduce the DJ? Time for DJ Skillspinz! First came across this particular DJ on the 'Sonic Imperial' sampler which included the highlight of this album, the extremely groovy "Scratch Of Fury" (for some reason it's called "Scratchillicious" on that comp!) There is other good stuff here complete with the obligatory self name check over and over and over and over and over again throughout! (yawn!) Clearly DJs have as big egos as rappers eh? But nothing is as good as the initial introduction to this DJ! "Do You Like Scratching?" is hot enough and there are moments where the beats, the breaks and the samples all come together but I'm still disappointed that a lot of this feels like filler!
