"When I die where do I go? Do I ascend above or do I rot in this hole?" "One nation under God, where is God in this nation?" "How can you forgive me if I can't forgive myself?" Colossus in name, and colossal in nature in both lyrical and musical content. Deep, searching and intense lyrics combine with gigantic, thundering vocals and a soundtrack that could demolish buildings. Generally leaning more towards the hardcore end of the spectrum, they throw in some more metal moments (check the verse riffs of "Counterfeit Kingdoms") and a smattering of melodic elements which contrast nicely but are no less intense than the rest of the music. The lyrics read almost like a journey from searching to acceptance of salvation. Questioning his personal salvation, as well as God's role in the world, struggling with sin, death and repentance, before finally accepting that "now finally I am free!", vocalist Alex Gutzmer narrates with a passionate and brutal roar. It is quite a short album, with only 10 tracks and two of those combine for one minute 52 seconds, but this is an excellent start from the Sioux Falls-based band who display ability, passion and enough diversity to stand out from their labelmates.
