We Brits may wince a bit at a cover sticker which boasts "17 Chris Rice classics" but let not that detract the listener from investigating this compilation of one of Nashville's most popular singer/songwriters. The particular gift which has made Chris such a favourite on US Christian radio is the quality of his best songs and they're all here - "Deep Enough To Dream", "Smell The Color 9", "The Other Side Of The Radio" - showing his ability to avoid the pitfalls of mainstream singer/songwriters wallowing in personal angst or resorting to lyrical obscurity, and the Christian songwriter endlessly re-iterating biblical truth so that it becomes cliché. Chris can bring fresh ways of expressing insights about God's acceptance of us despite all our mistakes ("Clumsy") or the joy of everyday blessing ("Smellin' Coffee") with a true songsmith's craft. Occasionally his judgment slips - "Go Light Your World", the song he wrote for Kathy Troccoli and one of the four new recordings here, is simply too "lighters in the air" maudlin. But his warm, expressive voice and sensitive acoustic-into-pop arrangements from producer Monroe Jones make this a great introduction to investigate an inspiring songwriting talent.

8 years into his ccm career, Chris releases a 17 song
collection of his well known songs; nice set to have!
The songset begins with a top fave from his debut,
"Deep Enough To Dream"; just love it completely! I connect
with the new song "Mama Prays"; great down to earth lyrics,
thanks Chris. I like the way he
recorded "Go Light Your World"; of course ccm top artist
Kathy Troccoli nailed it in the mid 90's; I also have a live
video of group Newsong from Billy Graham
Crusade singing the song. I have loved "Welcome To Our
World" from the first time I heard it; of course the
song was recorded well by 2 of ccm's top pop artists,
Michael W. Smith & Amy Grant: great song Chris! Any prodigal
can relate to "Home Tonight"; it reaches to
the heart. "And YOUR Praises Go On" from cd "Amusing";
another top favorite. You have to get a kick out of
"Cartoons"; wtg Chris! I have videos for some of these
songs; really like "The Other Side of the Radio". I cannot
say enough about "Untitled Hymn ( Come to JESUS)"; it gets
me everytimes and I
never get tired of listening to it; I prefer his
recording
from 2003 "Run the Earth, Watch the Sky". I missed not
seeing "Naive" on this collection. When most artists would
title a cd like this "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" etc. Chris
comes up with the phrase "Short Term Memories":note the
cover art by ccm artist Jimmy Abegg (associated with the
late Rich Mullins' band, the Ragamuffins);nice, simple &
reflective Jim.
