Back in the '60s and '70s when I was completely immersed in soul/R&B music one of my favourite singers and composers was Bunny Sigler (his version of "Let The Good times Roll" is still the definitive rendition of a rock'n'roll classic while his song "Sunshine" - a hit for The OJay's - is one of soul's most memorable compositions). So I was thrilled to hear that Bunny had returned to the faith of his youth and recorded this stirring album. Bunny's smooth, sinuous tenor has lost none of its soul power while his renditions of traditional songs like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Near The Cross" are exemplary. Really though, it's his new compositions like "He Walked On Water" and "What Did Moses Do?" (the latter with The Sharon Baptist Church Choir) which really stay in the mind. Possibly, the arrangements on the album might have benefited from some more hints of the old sound of Philadelphia which Bunny helped pioneer. But there is no questioning the veteran's singing and composing ability. Quality gospel.
