A striking CD from the start, piano-based strong melodies backed up with an orchestral sound which includes guitars, strings, horns, full band and even chimes immediately calls to mind Duke Special and a closer listen reveals shades of Kate Bush and Tori Amos, though with a softer and gentler vocal style than either. This six track disc is not however merely a collection of derivative stylings, it is inventive, quirky, moving, warm, joyful, questioning and ethereal both lyrically and musically. Playful changes in tempo and style even in mid-song along with a willingness to experiment, all held together with close harmony vocals, give this selection a feeling of life and movement whilst at the same time a sense of exploration and a willingness to ask questions of identity and meaning. From the impressive opener "Hush If You Must" with lush string and an ELO-style break in the middle, via the simplicity of guitar and close harmony of "I Am Mine" ending up with the storytelling of the strings and piano of "My Legionnaire" there are no highlights or low points to this collection, each song is consistently excellent, though each is different. This talented and creative Nashville-based songstress, classically trained and qualified in composition and piano, certainly has plenty to say in her words and music and will hopefully continue to say it for many years to come!
