If you're a regular listener to Cross Rhythms {and if not, why not?) then you'll already be in love with this album's delicious "We Don't Need Religion". That captivating classic, with its laconic pub sing-along chorus of "We don't need religion/But we could use the love of God" has to be one of the great CCM hooks of the last decade and the fact that it comes from one of the most underrated talents in Christian music isn't particularly surprising. For years the brilliant Belfaster has been making glorious music, his self-penned songs exuding earthy Celtic grit with arrangements that burst into life in the rich soil of timeless folk and blues melodies that flow in lyrical cadences, and lyrics that speak timeless spiritual truths while nimbly sidestepping cliche. From the lilting title track opener to the delightful closer this is a gem of an album. Here's a songwriter able to write songs of worship and songs of lost love, and succeed completely in both endeavours.
