Now this is what I call a throwback! Back in the mid sixties there were hundreds of Christian groups like Branches, performing music that was direct and devotional and which featured nice, precise harmonies and simple, often acoustic accompaniments. Gradually, the beat got heavier and this gentle soft-pop sound seemed as anachronistic as turtle neck sweaters and crypts festooned with fishnets. But the spirit of '66 lives on in this gifted bunch of Lancashire players. Carole Berry has a pleasant-on-the-ear voice. The songs are tuneful (though with a small budget recording they were ill advised to cover "From A Distance"). And the whole thing is undeniably pleasant, packed with mums-and-dads-appeal.
