Reviewed by Trevor Kirk If any group of singers deserves the accolade of legends in their own lifetimes, The Blind Boys of Alabama are the ones. Founder members Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter and George Scott are all now well past the three score years and 10, but show no sign of reaching for the carpet slippers and rocking chair, and along with more recent recruits Joey Williams, Ricky McKinnie and Bobby Butler, form a gutsy, passionate ensemble that is a credit to the traditions of gospel’s Golden Age. Accompanied by Robert Randolph’s Family Band on this 12-track offering, with special guest appearance by Ben Harper, The Blind Boys rasp and holler their way through a selection of material penned by such musical luminaries as Curtis Mayfield ("People Get Ready"), Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Cliff ("Many Rivers To Cross"), Prince and Stevie Wonder ("Higher Ground"), along with a few classics thrown in for good measure, such as "Precious Lord", "Wade In the Water", and Clarence’s own "Stand By Me". Even after over 60 years, The Blind Boys still have the power to move and inspire. Timeless music indeed, and long may it continue.
