Indian devotional songs to Christ are called Yeshu bhajans and an evening spent singing such songs is a satsung, which means "gathering of the truth". This latest album from Aradhna is a live performance of a satsung recorded at the Augustine Centre in Southampton, UK by Simon Parnall and Jonathan Rosser. With a growing number of Indian and Western Christians alike discovering the depth of worship and devotion expressed by Yeshu bhajans Chris Hale and Pete Hicks (who both currently reside in the US) are definitely the guys to introduce you to this beautiful and gentle way of worship. East and West combine with sitar, tabla, acoustic and bass guitar to bring you songs you will soon be chanting, even if you cannot speak Hindi. English translations are included but unlike their previous releases and because this is a live recording, Chris interprets into English the meaning of some of these bhajans and also offers inspiring prayers that enhance the enjoyment of this album. Aradhna have been quietly and humbly gaining a following in the UK and played tirelessly throughout the weekend at Greenbelt 2005. Chris (sitar and lead vocals) and Peter (acoustic guitar, vocals) are joined on this album by Travis Mcafee (bass), Shahid Suleman Khan (tabla) and Vinta Sroa (vocals). "Binti Sinle" and "Gaao Re" are happy, uplifting songs of praise and "Bhajo Naam" in particular encourages participation; "Bhajo Naam, Japo Naam" - "Sing His Name, Chant His Name" which you find yourself naturally doing. The slower "Subha Shaam Lun" begins with Chris on sitar, echoed by Pete on acoustic guitar and complimented by the vocals of Vinta Sroa. "Ishwarle" has an almost lullaby feel and is sung in Nepalese, where Chris was raised. This is an album to play for devotional reflection or simply to chill. It enchants with its rhythmic sounds and Chris' voice which is both gentle and passionate draws you into worship and invites you to join the dance.
