Jonny Baker and Jon Birch, whose unique partnership has delivered some of the most intriguing and creative Christian music in the UK over the last decade, unveil a set of worship songs that strongly fit into the alternative worship genre. Baker's book on the subject is an illuminating introduction into what can be achieved outside of hymns or Matt Redman. This album simply shows the duo practising what they preach with a collection of fellow travellers. Andy Thornton and Doug Gay contribute songs and all of it is wrapped up in Jon Birch's trademark ambient soundscapes and rhythms. Songs like "Save My Life" and "I'm Thirsty Again" drift by with their own intrinsic beauty. What I love about this is that the songs are very spacious allowing the listener to get past the words being sung into a deeper place of interacting with God. Emotionally, the songs are rooted in a psalm-like reality where all of life crunches together and the good bits and the struggles are celebrated in equal measure. Yet another excellent offering from the Proost collective.
