If you remember ‘80s jazz-funk band Shakatak, this is the real deal when it comes to jazzy soul workouts and instrumentals with a tinge of vocal colour. In a clever twist, Allen & Allen are keyboard maestro Bruce Allen and saxophonist Allen Wiggins (see what they've done there?) and together they've crafted a late night treat that oozes class from every pore. Self-written titles mixing silky smooth jazz-soul ("Always There") and more brass-led fare (the exquisite "Impressions") rub shoulders with covers by the likes of Dallas Holm and Stevie Wonder (a delightful reading of "All I Do"), and the playing throughout is right on the money. The perfect album for sticking on for a late summer evening.
