Acclaimed as the Queen of gospel music, Grammy award winning Walker releases a long awaited live album of both older and new songs by various artists. Although essentially a live album (it was performed in front of people), a lot of mixing and overdubbing went into this recording, ultimately producing a very realistic sound (I didn't realise 'til I read it). Walker is backed by an absolutely top class band, most noticeably musical director Derrick Lee at piano and featured vocalists include Shirley Ceaser and Dorothy Norwood among others. Musically, 'Live In Chicago' doesn't stick to the tried and tested formula of many gospel recordings. It ventures into light gospel/jazz in "Life Can Be So Beautiful" and what can only be described as gospel/blues in "In Shady Green Pastures" - listen for yourself! Bottom line? 'Live In Chicago' is refreshing, sincere and leaves you feeling satisfied.
