Here's a debut project which is an eclectic blend of different pop styles with a strong underlying jazz vibe. Original songs rub shoulders with a smattering of covers and the overall results are very pleasing. There is plenty here that grabs my attention and makes me smile, whether it's the big early '80s slap bass groove of "Rosy" or the pure chart pop sound and attitude of "Don't Call Me Baby" and "Reconsider". Obviously Abby Scott is not to be messed with! From the quirky title track to the dance pop of "Fool" and slower songs like "Get Out Of My Head" or the butter-wouldn't-melt cuteness of "Fly Me Away", Scott seems perfectly at home vocally no matter where she finds herself. Aside from the Madison Avenue tune, the cover versions are an excellent re-imagining of Sam Sparro's "Black & Gold" and a pretty ordinary version of Bacharah & David's "A House Is Not A Home" which is nice enough. The album closes with a lovely song, "Made In Heaven" penned by Scott's husband Chris Eaton, who also co-produced the album. It's a gorgeous song and the perfect way to finish the album. Praise must be given to the CD's artwork which is eye catching, colourful and features some shots of the lovely Abby enjoying her cake! The variety of styles on here shows Scott's versatility but also indicates that she's still making her mind up which musical direction she'd like to travel in. For the moment she's grabbing at it all and definitely having her cake and eating it.
