THE SONGS For The New Millennium project, which will be publishing a
radical new worship resource, is gaining momentum. The project,
supported by Greenbelt, Christian Aid, the United Reformed Church,
Catholic Youth Services, The Methodist Church, the Church Of England,
CAFOD, the Baptist Union and Church Of Scotland, is running a workshop
in East Greenwich in October and is still searching for songs. Said
Anne Richards, who until recently was the project's coordinator, "The
challenge is to write songs/hymns in contemporary language about the
realities of life and the issues that we face in the world today. We
have plenty of good worship songs in the Church but not many inspire
us to move out from worship and into action to change the world. Songs
For The New Millennium will do just that. Who is writing the songs
about justice, peace, HIV, bullying, poverty, debt, homelessness and
grief? Where are songs about Jubilee? Who is writing worship songs
which have no clichés in them?"
