New form of musical fusion strikes a note with Latin audiences

IN AN ARTICLE headed Marketing Trends in the May 1st issue of Christian Retailing, the US trade magazine reported on the unprecedented growth of reggaeton music. An extract from the article reads, "In the area of music, retailers are unanimous that reggaeton - a mixture of rap and reggae with a Latin flair - is a trend that's here to stay, both in the general and Christian markets. [An industry observer] said it's become 'very popular' since Christian versions of the music started in Puerto Rico about five years ago and spread across Latin America. 'There are tons of groups in Puerto Rico, and now they're being signed by music labels in the United States.' In the Christian world, some of the top reggaeton artists are Funky, Don Misionero and DJ Sace. Carol Bahnke, vice president of operations at Rejoice Music, said the rhythmic style isn't accepted by everyone, especially traditional churches. The lyrics are typically in the 'language of the street. But it's a way to worship the Lord,' she said."
