Pianist Mary Lou Williams featured in reissue of jazz mass classic.
SPECIALIST mainstream record label Smithsonian Folkways have reissued a classic album of Christian jazz. Pianist Mary Lou Williams was commissioned by the Vatican to write music for the Catholic Mass. The album, originally titled 'Music For Peace', was recorded in the late '60s and has now been reissued under the title 'Mary Lou's Mass'. A review in Mojo magazine described the project: "Williams bounces from hard bop to gospel to brooding blues and beyond, the diversity of her crossover casting 'Mary Lou's Mass' as a classic of this mini-genre."
