Blind Boys Of Alabama, the Soul Stirrers and others for Edinburgh production
THIS YEAR's Edinburgh Festival will feature the famed hit show The Gospel At Colonus at the Edinburgh Playhouse. The performances will take place from Saturday 21st August to Monday 23rd August and will feature such renowned gospel acts as the Blind Boys Of Alabama, the Soul Stirrers and the Inspirational Voices Of The Abyssinian Baptist Church. The Gospel At Colonus is adapted and directed by writer/director Lee Breuer with music composed by Bob Telson, best known for his Academy Award nominated score for the film Bagdad Café. Said Lee Breuer, "Casting The Gospel At Colonus back in 1983 I was a bit worried about some Pentecostals feeling that Greek Tragedy was a pagan form. After all, it premiered in 405 BC. The Reverend Martin Jacox, the great gospel 'shouter' with the legendary Soul Stirrers who died after our Moscow tour, said to me, 'Don't worry. It is a play about redemption and a happy death. Oedipus preaches a sermon of love, faith and a return to root values. Listen, you've got 40 devout Pentecostal gospel singers and three preachers there on stage. Son, you've got a Christian production.'"
