Candi Staton reminisces about her switch from gospel to R&B
THE VETERAN R&B and gospel star Candi Staton is interviewed in the August issue of Record Collector magazine. In the interview she talked about her transition to R&B from gospel after her marriage to R&B singer Clarence Carter in the '60s. She said, "It was very difficult at first as I did not know how to sing secular music. I did not know there was a difference so what I did was I would sing secular music like I did gospel music. I didn't look at the people. When you sang for the Lord, you clapped your hands in front of you and looked up. You were singing to God. In the secular world you worked the people. I did not know that. The first time I did a show with Clarence I was booed off the stage."
