DJ Coopoid: A-Z

Sunday 1st August 1999

With DJ COOPOID (otherwise known as Andy Cooper) taking a sabbatical from the weekly dance show on Cross Rhythms radio he's presented from 1995 to 1999, it seemed an appropriate moment for the sanctified dance maestro to offer this A_Z guide.

O is for Overjoyd - "Follow The Vibe"
Highly talented girl trio from London, with two songs on 'Ministry Of Sound' compilations. This was the first, in 1996 also: Dr Onionskin.

P is for Psalmistry - "Something About Your Love"
Christian music's answer to Fat Boy Slim/Prodigy. This is my favourite track from their album 'Armchair Rebellion'. It should be played to every teenager in the country as part of the national curriculum! also: Prophecy Of PANIC, Prodigal Sons, DJ Pope, Paradigm Shift, Preacha, DJ Pieere, Cece Peniston.

Q is for Quipo - "Warning"
This is Cameron Dante in disguise, on the 'Abundant' album. Apparently, 'quipo' is Spanish for 'equipment'!

R is for Raze - "That's The Way"
One of the most energetic live acts around, from Oklahoma, prove they can still survive and succeed without Zarc Porter's production skills! also: Rhythm Saints, Re:Fresh, Raving Loonatics, Cece Rogers.

S is for Candi Staton - "Love On Love"
She's inspired many with this and her previous chart hit with The Source, 'You Got The Love'. Great vocals, lots of different mixes, also: S'dance, Synergy, Sounds Of Blackness, Spirits, Sozo, DJ Spen, Secret Archives Of The Vatican, Sonik Boom Of Love, Sub-micrc Storm, Shine.

T is for Trip - "Energy"
Christian music's first drum'n'bass album, about it! We want more. Simply brilliant! also: Lisa Taylor, Barbara Tucker.

U is for Ultra Nate - "Divine Love"
Amongst the chart hits nestles this beautiful gospel groove (and not the only one she's ever recorded), on the album 'Situation:Critical'.

V is for Virus - "Floatboat"
Kings of the instrumental. Sometimes ambient and meditative, sometimes fast frenetic. This is a great chill-out tune on the 1996 double album 'Odd', also: Voices, Vision Of Heaven.

W is for the World Wide Message Tribe "Heatseeker"
Is it possible for the Tribe to ever do better than this? Huge menacing rhythms with hard-hitting chants to challenge even the most docile believers, also: Michael Watford, The Wades, Martha Wash, Watchman, BeBe Winans.

X is for Xodus - "Lift Up Your Hands"
Another classic garage tune featuring Dawn Tallman. Wonderfully inspirational die section focusing on Christ's crucifixion. Pure worship.

Y is for Yazz-"The Only Way Is Up"
Another rare letter. Now a committed Christian, Yazz got to number one in the National charts with this catchy song in 1989.

Z is for Zarc Porter - "Re:Revival"
Possibly Zarc's finest moment with the World Wide Message Tribe, from the album 'We Don't Get What We Deserve'. Blistering synth riffs, diving drum rolls and haunting accounts of 'God moving in mighty revival power. Awe inspiring. CR
