On 9th, 10th and 11th July, 1993 3,000 people gathered for a weekend of music, arts and God for Holy Power, the third Cross Rhythms festival. 25 of them were subsequently asked to select a highlight of that extraordinary weekend in Okehampton, Devon. Organisers and school kids, youth workers and housewives, accountants and musicians say in their own words what it was that, for them, made Cross Rhythms '93 special. Ian Bosworth took the pictures.

THE WORLD WIDE MESSAGE TRIBE
World Wide Message
Tribe were absolutely mind blowing. God challenged me very deeply on a
few things. I couldn't sleep after I went to bed! These guys are
anointed.
Harvey Jones - Sunderland
ZAC'S CAFÉ
even enjoyed the rain. Highlights
for me were the 65dBA, the dancer in the arts tent and the lovely
women at Zac's cafe where you could get bacon rolls, burgers, toilet
rolls and 'umbrellas all at very reasonable prices.
Frank
Humphris - Eastbourne
MIKE STANLEY
What really touched my heart
was Mike Stanley, singing "I'm gonna be bold, I'm gonna break the
mould." I can't remember if this was the title of the song but those
words have stuck with me.
Jackie Mills - West Midlands
SPLIT LEVEL
The highlight of my day had to be
the truly stupendous Split Level and their amazing rendition of "I
Found Love". Yes!! It was me screaming like a banshee as Adrian
Thompson plucked out his final riff!!!! (What a confession!!)
Charlotte Osborn - Gloucester
STEWARDS
The stewards deserve a big thank you
for being so helpful even when our questions sounded stupid (our
Scottish! accents didn't help).
Steven Munro - Midlothian
CHRIS COLE
The words of the Cross Rhythms
organiser Chris Cole during one of his mainstage introductions stuck
in my mind. "The Christian music scene is not a sub-culture but a
counterculture and the radical message it contains needs to be heard.
We as Christians need to get behind them and support them."
Mel
Owen - Devon
HARRY BROWNING
As Kevin (Prosch) was setting up
Harry Browning acoustically played the most anointed fill I have ever
heard - it was worth being there for that 15 minutes. Almost
prophetically as he finished and Kevin was all set to play, the whole
of Mainstage went dead - the amps were just too wet. The organisers
didn't panic. Kevin was switched to Yellow Tent! I must say I have
never seen more grace displayed by musicians as they had to dismantle
their gear and completely re-rig. There was such a peace about the
whole operation.
Ian Traynar - Bristol
YOUTH GROUP
Cross Rhythms was really special
this year. As a youth leader it was exciting to see all of our group
changed by God. Some of the young people brought were only ten, 11 and
12 but the Lord by his Spirit gently touched each of them and they
will never be the same again. They are all seeking more of God now.
Praise God for the thirst he has put within them. One boy of 13, Gary,
was saved and set free from many problems. The knock on effect has
been the young people telling their friends, other youth club members
and family. It's so good to see them excited about Jesus. I had been
really concerned for these young people but the Lord did in three days
more than I could do in a year.
Martin Bunkum - Looe
GETHSEMANE ROSE
Although metal team Gethsemane
Rose had, as did all the bands, their own little niche of loyal fans
who were there to see them and them alone, the band's obvious
excitement, enthusiasm at being there, and sheer professionalism of
their act had everyone rocking by the end of their first song. Seeing
the delight on the band's face at being such overwhelming crowd
pleasers only had the effect of rallying them even more, myself was
blown away by the light-fingered work on the frets of lead and rhythm
while the bass and drums locked together in perfect union. The band
were for me the high point of the weekend. By the end of the set
genuine calls of encore resounded throughout the crowd when the
dreaded Mr Cummings appeared trying to explain about "time schedules".
This fell on deaf ears in more ways than one. The judge's decision was
final however and we would have to wait to see them at next year's
Cross Rhythms.
Rob Broom - Gunnislake
ROB ASH
By Sunday evening fatigue had certainly
set in and to be honest home really was calling. But as I wandered
into the Big Top to hear the last few bands play to the last faithful
survivors, I realised how fortunate I was to have stuck it out to the
end. Rob Ash appeared on the stage with just an acoustic and a friend
doing backups and started to produce music that was a delight,
insightful images in deftly crafted songs that inspired both my heart
and mind. Marie-Louise Flint - Tavistock
dkf
As a grandfather of six, possibly I wouldn't
be expected to like noisy rock music. But dkf, who led the worship on
the Sunday morning service, brought much that really stirred my
spirit. Here were young people whose exuberance, enthusiasm and love
of the Lord Jesus uplifted and excited me. I've been a Christian for
45 years but I've seldom heard a better praise band. I look forward to
booking them for my church where I'm sure their ministry will uplift
the whole congregation.

NO SECOND CHANCE
I saw No Second Chance on
Friday night and have decided that they are totally rad - the song
"How Could You Keep Jesus Locked Out" really made me think and realise
how much I need him.
Phil Butler (15 and a bit) -Willenhall
