Be'ad Chaim is a pro life organisation based in Israel, helping pregnant women who are in a crisis situation. Paul Calvert caught up with Sandy Shoshani to find out more about their great work.
Be'ad Chaim have counsellors in four different cities in Israel with a vision of opening two more offices. They are currently based in Jerusalem, Tiberius, Beersheba and Haifa. I began by asking Sandy for an overview of the service they offer.
"When a woman calls she can ask any question she wants about pregnancy, about abortion information and the dangers of abortion and how to become pregnant. Anything that is relevant to an unborn child.
"Then we will invite her to our office to watch a DVD about baby development and do a free pregnancy test and ultrasound.
"We want to offer her everything she needs to keep this baby safe, including a shelter if it's needed! Perhaps she is in an abusive relationship and needs protection... We also offer a lot of help after the birth.
"During the pregnancy we will encourage her and be with her for support. After the birth we will offer her support with a project called Operation Moses. A family abroad is able to adopt a mother so we will provide that mother with a baby bed, a bath, a stroller, car seat, carry on chair, basically anything that the mother will need after her pregnancy including blankets and bottles.
"Here in Israel we have about 40 thousand abortions a year, 20 thousand of those are paid for by the government and another 20 thousand are private abortions.
"The 20 thousand that are paid for by the Government are women who are under 18, women who are over 40, or women who are in some sort of crisis situation. Many times it is just a single mother with no income.
"Here in Israel 2.4 % of women who join the army fall pregnant and 75 % of those women will choose an abortion. The army make it very easy to have an abortion; economically it is better for the army if the woman chooses abortion. Some women will have 2-3 abortions paid for by the army without any questions being asked.
"The other 20 thousand women who have private abortions are usually married women who have decided for economical reasons not to have another child.
"My view is that most women choose to have an abortion primarily because of convenience. They are unwilling to make the sacrifices whether it is education or work. Usually the unborn baby comes second to everything else. Yet three weeks after fertilisation a baby's heart is trying to beat. The baby looks more like a person as time goes on but at 8 weeks that baby has every single organ in its body that it's going to need to live. It's a complete human being. At 12 weeks every organ is trying to work.
"Many women say it's my body and I can do what I want with it, which is true it is her body, but she should consider the consequences first of pre-marital sex, she should know there are a lot of consequences besides sexually transmitted diseases, emotional problems for example. Once she becomes pregnant it's her body but another life is involved now with his own set of chromosomes and genes and purpose and plans, dreams and ambitions.
"In the Bible many babies were called to ministry while in their mother's womb, like Jeremiah, John the Baptist and Samson.
"There are also many risks to abortion. A third of women who have had an abortion will later on have difficulties with pregnancy. Some will remain infertile. There is a much greater chance of having a premature baby if you've had an abortion in the past. There is difficulty conceiving. The abortion could give various infections e.g. problems with the fallopian tubes.
"After the abortion many women suffer from depression and because there is a lot of blood it makes them really think about what they have done to the unborn child. Many women that I have met have felt guilt even though they may feel they have pushed having an abortion to the back of their minds.
"We have had a lot of wonderful things happen here while trying to save the unborn child.
"One day I was out on the streets giving out flyers. I handed one to an older lady who put it into her handbag.
"A few days later her daughter came and said she was pregnant and her boyfriend was saying that she needed to get rid of the baby. The mother then promptly pulled the flyer out of her bag and gave it to her daughter; her daughter read it and said 'Mum it's a sign'.
"These aren't people who are walking with God but the girl saw it as a sign from God.
"The mother totally supported her daughter and the daughter married her boyfriend and she had a beautiful baby boy! All because of one little leaflet and the mighty hand of God.
"The Mother and the Grandmother are so thankful that I was there and I am so blessed that I could be there and change a life for good."

After reading this I was flooded with tears as my heart goes out to all women who are faced with this decision. I am so greatful that this ministry is available to these women and hearing the great work and support offered before and after the child is born. Not sure if we in the USA have anything like as I have never heard of this but to have such a ministry would be wonderful. May your ministry be blessed and continue the great work for His glory!
