Paul Calvert spoke with Nabeel Hamouz about the vote

I spoke to some kids in my refugee camp; we've been speaking to kids, talking to them and playing with them, getting them to have fun, because this is taking their thoughts away from what they are living in at the moment. Some of them they have seen yesterday on the TV this picture of this kid who was in this bus and she had a dream that she grew up to be a young lady and was walking by the airport and it says Palestinian Airport. This is her dream. I know it is a movie thing to show the Palestinians we could have a state, but this is the dream of this kid. Now one of the kids who were with me he said, 'Does that mean we are going to have a Palestinian state and we are going to have an airport and I can go and fly with an aeroplane'?

Palestinian kids are living in this position right now where they are missing so many things. They don't have the freedom or the right as kids to live as kids, as any other kids in America or Europe. They do go through this period of time where I think they shouldn't go through and I totally believe that, because if you speak with kids you know what kids are like. With children's rights, you know that they shouldn't live in this position; so they need other sources. You know if a kid is six years old and going through a checkpoint seeing a soldier with a gun, having another guy by the wall, this is something he shouldn't see. He shouldn't hear a gunshot at night. He shouldn't see people getting killed on the streets. He shouldn't be killed himself. There are things we are missing and it's just tiny things. It could be tiny things we are asking for. It is a big thing, but we are asking for tiny things so that we can see a bright future. That's the main thought and the main thing that Palestinians are looking for.

I know readers might think what we are talking about is Palestinian terrorism. No there are Palestinians and I am one of them and we want to live in peace. I want to see my people growing in a good environment. I want to see my brother in a very good university so that he can study and be a successful man. I want to see my grandmother living in this community where she has the right to live right; the elderly, kids, youth, all these slices of the community are missing their rights and when we ask for a Palestinian state that means there is a request from the government to start and act like we are a state.

There are also wages that needs to be sorted; the minimum wage. Work needs to be provided. There are so many things that are normal and we just ask that things in the community need to be sorted. That's why it is going to be sorted through politics away from violence.

There are new groups on Facebook against violence, but with rights, so we are against violence but we ask for our rights. I don't think anyone standing on the street asking for his rights back is a terrorist. There are Palestinians who are not terrorists.

Paul: What is your prayer for Israel and the Palestinian people?

Nabeel: My prayer is to wake up and to realise that we are human. To put aside money, religion and everything that you are believing in; all the hatred you have for someone and put it aside and sit with yourself and remember that this person that is standing in front of you is a human and as much as you want to live and have a good life he wants to live and have a good life. I know it sounds impossible but nothing is impossible. You can live in peace with anyone you want. If a man can actually get a lion to be a good friend of him; it sounds impossible to have a lion, which you are going to sleep next to a lion. The lion would kill you if you sleep next to a lion, but you can manage to feed that lion from childhood and train him, you can train your heart as well as your mind to actually realise and see that it is a person who is standing in front of you.

There is a wall between us now. The new wall that is there, you should think I am a human but the person behind that wall is a human as well.

Enough, it's time to actually change; so it is enough of violence, enough of hatred, it's time to actually realise there is a request that is peace. Everyone is requesting peace. Everyone is requesting justice. We do request justice here, because it is missing towards both Palestinians and Israelis. Yes that's my prayer.
