A diverse set of rock influences result in a hook-laden album from a Minnesota-based band. |
|
Reviewed by Tony Cummings With literally hundreds of US Christian rock bands being launched onto the scene, it's easy to miss a promising newcomer. But this Minnesota-based band will reward all those who investigate this impressive release. Their sound combines the pop grunge leanings of groups like Kutless and Building 429, the hook-laden modern rock of Sanctus Real and The Afters and the ethereal alternative of Copeland yet thanks to an expressive lead singer in Justin Anderson (apparently he lost his voice when hitmaking producer Aaron Sprinkle was tracking the album and Zach Hodges had to step in later and get Anderson's vocals on the tape!) it still sounds fresh. There are some memorable songs with themes including the struggle to find peace with God in the middle of a chaotic world ("Down Silver Lake"), the shortcomings of self-help psychology ("Mirrors") and "Yesterday" where the songwriter recognises that the grass wasn't really greener in the past. No doubt you'll be hearing a song or two from this set on the radio in the future. America does this modern rock thing so well and these guys deserve their moment in the spotlight.
