The Messengers are a four piece from Texas who've been together for over a decade but have only released albums in the last few years. 'Under The Blood' is their second album, a blend of soft rock, country and gospel. The group have a mellow, harmonic style which is affirming if not always challenging. If you could imagine a gospel version of The Eagles, that would probably be The Messengers. That thought was provoked by the opening track "Satan's Monument" which seems the perfect antidote to "The Last Resort". The group's sound is predominantly the work of Tommy Clark (assisted by brother Jeff), who wrote most of the material, and also produced and arranged the album. To this reviewer the sound is unfortunately a little dated. Having said that there is some good songwriting, obviously based on real and common experiences, with tracks like "When I Was Your Enemy" and the title track registering. "On My Way" is a more upbeat song with a folk/rock feel with almost a Gerry Rafferty feel to it. And if you're into Old Time Gospel you'll appreciate "'Blessed Hope"' and "Mr In-Between".
