Mixing Christmas secular and Christian classics such as "Rudolph" (yes, "Rudolph") with "Hark The Herald Angels" is quirky enough, but it's the structure of the set in its entirety which is most intriguing: the listener is lulled into a cosyish Christmas world for the first seven songs, but then comes the punch - a real triple whammy! There is a hauntingly Celtic "Silent Night" which is outstanding, followed by a great version of Buddy Green's "Mary Did You Know" and an original "Part Of Heaven", both impressive. It all reminds me of many church evangelistic events I've attended. You know, invite a friend to a Chicken And Chips Supper Night at the pub (seemingly harmless) only to be served up a handy gospel talk by a visiting speaker for dessert, thus hoodwinking the unsuspecting guest! Now that's either canny or trickery and manipulative, depending on your view. Personally, the latter rings true, both with the event and this music. The quality singing and production on display warrants a full set of original material, or else, why not keep it all Santa schmaltz? It's unfortunate, but this has Christian Coffee Shop Only written all over it.

You have to admire Gary somewhat in spite of all
that was happening in his life at this time, he
manages to keep the music going.
Aside from the recording studio, he hosts the TNN
popular Sam's Place; he has success in getting
Amy Grant to appear for the December '97 show.
I prefer Gary's ccm verses Christmas, however I
do like the music for opening "Rudolph". Gary sang
quite an edited version of "O Holy Night" for the
Christmas at Sam's Place. He appears to have taken what one might call an Amy approach on "Hark the Herald Angels". Gary's self penned cd title song "This Gift", in it's heart felt lyrics are spelled out
the heart -breaking news of his initial separation from Amy.
Maybe Gary should have waited to record vocals for this Christmas album a year or more after things settled down more, there is sadness in his voice with every song heard. Christmas is a joyous time of the year. The above writer has quite an open view, but
rather leaves space for personal views.
God Bless, Don
