It must be almost as difficult to spell Uilleann pipes as it is to play them, but Troy Donockley is a virtuoso musician with a string of credits to match (Clannad, Maddy Prior, etc). He's probably best known for his work with Iona and it's no surprise to find most of Iona guesting on this album. (He also features on the fantastic Mostly Autumn CD 'Passengers'). This might not be an explicitly Christian CD but it is deeply spiritual and atmospheric, as you would expect anything from the Celtic stable to be. There are interesting instruments and juxtapositions, and it is beautifully composed and arranged, richly textured, symphonic music. If you like Iona (and I do) you'll almost certainly like this too, though it is quite different. It defies categorisation really, much like the work of Ketil Bjornstad, Terje Rypdal and a number of Norwegian (maybe) jazz composers/musicians. It is deeply original and creative and touches my soul.

Virtuoso Uilleann pipe player with a few well known friends creates music of symphonic stature.

Troy Donockley has built up a formidable reputation as both a Composer/Arranger and Musician/Performer and as a leading virtuoso of the Uilleann Pipes. He has had his orchestral work performed in venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and Glasgow Concert Hall with soloists as illustrious as Maire Brennan (Clannad) and Lesley Garrett.

His new album "The Pursuit of Illusion" continues to push the boundaries with a highly individual blend of the English Classical and Irish Folk traditions. Music from both albums has been used in Film/TV all over the world inc BBC1, BBC2, C4, Discovery and CNN.

When I was introduced to Iona in \'92 I was immediately hooked. The world of Celtic-influenced music overwhelmed me and changed my musical tastes forever. I had never before heard the Uillean pipes. The ethereal beauty they produced melted my soul. The next step was to find out all I could about Troy. It was a long wait, 1998, for his solo debut, \'The Unseen Stream\', but so worth it. I own both his collaborative efforts with Dave Bainbridge, \'When Worlds Collide\' and \'From Silence\', as well as both his solo releases. Along with just a few other artists of different genres, Troys\' works are all I listen to. I never tire of them. It\'s like walking down a street a hundred times, I notice something different each time. I realize his music is difficult to find in retail outlets which drives me to share it with anyone who will take the time to listen. \'The Pursuit of Illusion\', like all his music, takes a bit of time to sink in. It is joyfully complex and, for me, requires listening without distraction and closed eyes to focus and hear every nuance. It\'s a must for collectors and a welcome suprise for the newcomer. Enjoy it from your heart.
